Quran Science Oceanology

The Quran contains numerous verses that allude to the phenomena of the oceans and seas, which can be studied through the lens of oceanology. These verses showcase the miraculous nature of the Quran, illustrating how it aligns with scientific understanding.

One significant verse is found in Surah Al-Furqan (25:53), where Allah says, "And He it is Who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and a prohibiting partition." This verse reflects the concept of estuarine dynamics, where fresh and salt water coexist yet do not mix immediately, a principle confirmed by modern oceanography.

Furthermore, Surah Al-Anfal (8:11) mentions, "When He caused a slumber to overcome you, giving you security from Him. And He sent down from the sky rain upon you, that He might purify you thereby and remove from you the evil of Satan and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet." This reference to rain and its effects on the earth can lead to discussions about oceanic evaporation and the water cycle, which is crucial for sustaining life.

Classical scholars such as Ibn Kathir have commented on these verses, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the signs of Allah in nature. In his Tafsir, he articulates how the study of the seas reflects divine wisdom, urging believers to contemplate these signs as part of their faith.

For practical guidance, Muslims are encouraged to explore and understand marine environments, appreciating the bounties of Allah in creation and recognizing their responsibilities in conserving these resources. This aligns with the Quranic teaching that emphasizes stewardship of the earth, as noted in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:30), where humans are appointed as caretakers of the earth.
